We have a quick week ahead with only two and half days of school and Turkey Day (aka-Thanksgiving) in our sights. This week you will learn how to find the epicenter of an earthquake by using the seismic data collected from multiple locations. Then finally, we will talk about the three scales used to determine the size (or magnitude) of an earthquake - Richter, Mercalli Intensity, and Moment-Magnitude. Each scale is useful, but not useful for all earthquakes. We will also look at earthquakes currently happening around the world and why they are happening. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
Estancia curioso y seguir buscando respuestas! Last week we learned about how stresses within rock cause it to crack - creating a fault. This week we'll be looking at the very moment that the crack (or fault) is made or shifts. Waves of energy, or seismic waves, radiate from the fault causing damage near the origin of the earthquake and further away too. We'll be studying the types of seismic waves made by earthquakes and how scientists record them - using seismographs. You will have a guidance class on Wednesday - so no science class. Later in the week, we'll be doing an activity to study the movement of seismic waves during which we be using slinkies. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
Estancia curioso y seguir buscando respuestas! Short and sweet this week, with no school on Tuesday and Veteran's Day on Friday. Now that your Google Site portfolios are set-up, we can officially begin the Earthquakes unit. This week we will be looking at the stresses that rock goes under before earthquakes occur. Once rocks are stressed for long enough, cracks (or fault lines) are made in the rock. We'll be checking out the different types of faults that can develop too. Once faults are made, rocks can slip past each other, but not without a lot friction and chaos - this is how earthquakes happen. Plate Tectonics tests will be reviewed and returned on Wednesday. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
Estancia curioso y seguir buscando respuestas! |
