Welcome back - hope you enjoyed some well deserved time off. This week we'll be looking at how buildings are now designed with earthquakes in mind. Whether billions of dollars are spent on special foundations or everyday materials are used to prevent a building from collapsing, engineers are inventing ways for people to survive an earthquake if they're caught in a building. This week you will also be designing and creating your own earthquake-safe building, and will be testing out how well it works in a simulated earthquake. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
This week is another short one - with a half day on Tuesday and Veterans Day on Wednesday. We will finish up looking at faults early in the week. Then, those of you who are in class on Tuesday, will have the chance to check out the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco that leveled the whole city and surrounding area. The area sits directly over the San Andreas Fault, and this strike-slip fault is the main focus of this movie. There will be a 2 bar quiz on stresses and faults on Friday, with a Kahoot! review on game on Thursday. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
This week we will begin applying what we learned about plate tectonics to our next unit on EARTHQUAKES! To begin the week, we will find out what you already know about earthquakes and then receive your Plate Tectonics tests. No school on Tuesday, but then once we return we will be checking out how Earth's crust can be stressed - and how this stress can move and crack gigantic sections of land. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
