This week will be broken up again because of the Math MCAS on Tuesday and Wednesday. During the Math MCAS we will continue to watch Life According to Sam - a documentary about a middle school age boy living with a lethal genetic disorder called Progeria. Before MCAS begins this week you will get a little taste of what to expect on the Science MCAS next Tuesday. We'll also find out what science topics from the past three years you feel like you need the most help on and take some time to review some of those ideas. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
Welcome back from Spring break! Hope you had a fun, safe and restful vacation. This week, ELA MCAS will be on Wednesday and Thursday which will break up what we'll be doing in class this week. To start, the A Call to Action assignment given before break will not be continuing, and we will discuss why in class on Monday. You will take some time to update your digital portfolios with your concept maps and arguments from the Socratic seminar. (If you have not yet handed in your evidence and arguments from the seminar, please do so immediately.) Then, on the MCAS days this week, we will begin viewing a documentary named Life According to Sam - about a boy living with the rarest disease in the world called Progeria. Then at the end of the week, we will begin our last unit of the year - astronomy!
There is an opportunity called the Global Ed Student Showcase during which students share their solutions to real-world problems at a statewide event in Gillette Stadium in the fall. This is a perfect place to share your city and coastal designs that help lessen the impact of sea level rise. If you or your group are interested in presenting, please let Mr. Bowles know by Wednesday of this week. Stay curious and keep looking for answers! Final week before April break! Early in the week we will be doing our final preparations for the Socratic seminar which is trying to answer the question, Are humans causing extreme weather events? The seminar will be held on Wednesday down in the library so we can have a roundtable discussion. Make sure you are prepared to be part of the conversation and understand your ideas and statements very well before Wednesday. Mr. Bowles will be out at a conference on Tuesday, so please make sure to ask him any questions before you leave on Monday or email him before Wednesday. Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
Welcome back from a beautiful three day weekend! As you continue to prepare for the socratic seminar, the focus this week will be discovering if there is enough evidence to prove that extreme (and abnormal) weather events are being caused by rising carbon dioxide levels. To begin the week, you will have time to prepare your statements based on your collection of evidence and quotes from last week. We will then begin to look how weather forms and investigate theories and evidence that supports and denies carbon dioxide's effect on the world's weather patterns. This week will be pretty broken up - on Wednesday, we will view and provide feedback to Dr. Pohlman's students on their climate change presentations; and on Thursday, the MCAS practice session will be happening in the morning and the school play, Shrek Jr., will seen in the afternoon. So, our only full class days this week are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Keep in the back of your mind...Are humans causing extreme weather events? Is there enough evidence to say that it's humans or just Earth's natural process? Where do you stand? Can you persuade others to stand with you? Stay curious and keep looking for answers!
