This will be an exciting week in science as we will start off by checking out the full topographic maps produced by the Appalachian Mountain Club in a marker hunt. Then on Tuesday, you will begin work on creating your own 3D printed topographic map of some of the most famous (and/or tallest) mountains in the world. Along with this 3D print, you will be creating your topographic map and provide some background info about the topography of the mountain. There will be a 2 bar quiz on Topography on Friday.
MCAS classes continue this week on Monday and Thursday with Dr. Pohlman and Mr. Bowles. Topics this week are Genetics and Animal vs Plant Cell (and Photosynthesis). Make sure to sign-up beforehand. Stay curious and keep looking for answers! Estancia curioso y seguir buscando respuestas! This will be an exciting week in science as we continue to learn about topography and how to read topographic maps. Although learning a skill like this may seem out-of-date with the ability to look-up anything on Google Maps, understanding how to read a map allows you visualize your surroundings and gives you a better sense of direction. If a GPS does all the work for you and then it breaks or sends you to the wrong place, you are all alone with no idea where you are (Ask Mr. B about his summer GPS mishap). This is one of the basic skills you should have as you head out into the world.
We will start off the week by checking out full topographic maps produced by the Appalachian Mountain Club. Then by mid-week you begin work on creating your own 3D printed topographic map of almost any mountain in the world. Along with this 3D print, you will provide some background info about the topography of the mountain. MCAS classes begin this week on Tuesday and Thursday with Dr. Pohlman and Mr. Bowles. Topics this week are Force & Motion and Mass, Density & Volume and Cell Parts & Functions. Sign-up now before classes fill up,,,then stay curious and keep looking for answers! We'll be wrapping up the Erosion & Deposition unit this week with a review on Monday and a 4 bar test on Tuesday. After school help will be available Monday for exam prep. Also, the study guide answer key and the Kahoot will be on the homepage of the website - using these two resources will be extremely helpful in preparing for the test. For the rest of the week, we will start a new unit called Mapping Earth's Surface, during which you will learn how to read and navigate topographic maps.
Lastly, if you're feeling a little worried about Science MCAS coming up on May 8th & 9th, you are not alone! Starting next week, every Tuesday and Thursday until MCAS, there will be after school review sessions from 2:45 - 3:45 pm with both Dr. Pohlman and Mr. Bowles. These sessions will cover many topics from both Life Science and Physical Science. They will be a great way to review topics you've been taught in the past or feel like you missed out on. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either science teacher. Stay curious and keep looking for answers! Estancia curioso y seguir buscando respuestas! |
